=============================================================================== Zim's Rare Tape List. R.E.M./Phish/Dead/Etc... Revision 12/27/99 =============================================================================== Howdy fellow tape traders! Here is the one and only list of Zim's rare tapes. Each entry is a separate live concert, or compilation that I have stored on metal or chrome cassette tape, vinyl or CD. There are two lists, a long and a short. This is the long version which is a title/date/Quality/Source /Length list, and includes setlists and notes. The longer list includes set lists and comments too. I have traded for ALL of these tapes through the e-mail and through murmur (the now defunct REM mailing list) except for the first two I ever owned, which I bought at a record show. So needless to say, no money will ever pass through my hands in dealing with tape trades. If you can get those first couple of boots to start with, a little work will bring you a list such as I have here. Please do not ask me to trade tapes for money. I will refuse to even discuss it. Each listing is organized like this: *Title/Description. Date Quality Source Length The date is an approximation unless the exact one is known. The quality is ranked on a 5 point scale. 5.0 is damn near perfect and quite rare to find. A 4.0 is excellent and easy to listen to, but may show some signs of being an amateur recording, or may have some small amount of noise... A (*) after the date is just a note to myself about where the source is located in my collection. The source is usually a soundboard (SBD or SB) tape or an audience (AUD or AU) recording. Soundboard means that someone had a direct line between the sound mixing board at the concert, and their tape deck. The recordings I have on vinyl(VY) and CD or those obtained through other means will also be listed under source. (i.e. FM, ST = studio, CDR = Mastered onto CD-Recordable, etc...) ******** WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR ********** What can you offer me that isn't already on the list? I'd like to continue finding some of the original "bootleg" releases in the original cover or jewel case and in good physical condition. In the past, I have sent a bunch of tape copies of bootlegs in exchange for one real bootleg. If you want to expand your collection into tape, and are getting tired of that vinyl boot, record it, then send me the original in exchange for a predetermined number of my tapes. (Usually about 5 per CD or LP, and 10 for a double LP or double CD) I will also make perfect digital copies of anything I already have on CD or CD-R onto a new CD-R for you with my CD burner. I will trade one of these for one CD boot. I can also make full color copies of all inserts and labels for this type of trade. I'm also looking for other rare stuff like radio promo singles, or import singles. Hey, if you think I might like it, ask me. I may also accept stuff from other bands that might not be on this list. I will only accept tapes if they are from a concert I do not have. Since so many dates have come out on CD or Vinyl, there are a lot of dates I already have, so please take this into consideration. In general I like to trade stuff on Maxell XLII or XLII-S tapes with no Dolby used. I will gladly buy/record to the trader's wishes however, including other tape types/brands, and the use of Dolby B or C. Keep in mind that a request for metal or other expensive media will require a better deal for me. My recording deck is an Aiwa AD-R505 with HX-Pro. The source deck is a JVC TD-W318 with pitch control (to avoid things sounding too fast or too slow.) If by some chance we have a tape for tape trade, you buy my tapes and record on them. I buy your tapes and record on them, then we just trade through the mail. Any questions? Just mail me at zim@svs.com Thanks, Jason Zimberoff - zim@svs.com - http://www.svs.com/zim |"Have you ever had Orange Crush the soda pop? Its wretched."-Michael Stipe-REM| R.E.M. Central Rain, Country Feedback, Walk Unafraid, Man On The Moon, I'm Not Over You, Perfect Circle, Daysleeper, Pretty Persuasion, Strange, Passenger --COMMENTS: Another tv broadcast. Pretty Persuasion and Strange are played live for the first time since the Green tour. My copy sounds like it was recorded off the original broadcast, but possibly over-driven a bit. The high end is muffled a little bit, which is why this isn't rated higer. The last song ends very quickly after it starts. An audience member later wrote in a review that the stage amps went out and the crowd just sang along instead... But it isnt on the recording. --MY COPY: Tape *Grünspan Club, Hamburg, Germany 11/2/98 4.7 FM 60 Losing My Religion, Electrolite, Lotus, Parakeet, New Test Leper, Daysleeper, Sad Professor, Country Feedback, The Apologist, So. They recorded some of the songs more than once for broadcasting, but I'm not sure which versions are found here. I do not know the origin of the last track. There is a lot of conversation, and also a lot of places where it is obvious the recording was stopped and re-started. --MY COPY: 2 CD-R from MP3 *Bridge School Benefit - Mtn. Lousy place to see a concert, but the sound on this one is good. Less than 4 rating due to lots of nearby audience chatter and an occasional muffled minute or two. Good clarity, not much level, and a bit of crowd chatter, but a good show. This is how it went: Stipe is in the middle of singing Moon River... audience member: "fuck off!" Mills: "You come up here and..." Stipe: "I can see you..." Mills: "Come on! Come on! Come up here and say it" (audience cheers and claps) Stipe: "Are you blushing yet? You feeling stupid?" Mills: "Easy for you from down there isn't it, come on up here and say it" Then later on after 1,000,000... Buck: "The guy who yelled 'fuck you' during Moon River meet me backstage you asshole" After a shocking version of Sweet Home Alabama in which Stipe sings that he can't remember the 2nd verse... Stipe: "Guitar players can't sing for shit!" Buck: "Singers can't play guitar for shit either" This show would have to be one of the most unusual and memorable R.E.M. shows of all time (in my opinion anyway), the amount of cover versions and the fact they were ready to beat up an audience member (as well as the fact they must have had a few too many pre show cocktails) all adds up to an incredible show --MY COPY: Tape *Rochester, NY 8/15/85 3.5 AUD 90 Feeling Gravitys Pull, Harborcoat, Letter Never Sent, Maps and Legends, Hyena, Driver 8, Fall On Me, Good Advices, So. Regardless it is a pristine, beautifully stereo, full-length copy of a second leg Roll the Bones Show. RTB went through several tour legs. 1st leg featured the basic set. On 12/6/91 (maybe a bit earlier) "Ghost of a Chance" was tossed into the set. This is the leg that is represented on this show. Rush went to Europe soon after and added a bit of Cygnus X-I to the end of the encore. And finally on the last leg of the tour, at outdoors shows they pulled out "Vital Signs", "The Trees", and "The Analog Kid" without dropping anything but "The Pass" and "Subdivisions". Highlights: Bravado and the huge encore medley. *Redbird Arena - Normal, Il 11/9/91 3.5 AUD 135 (Presto Tour) *Irving, CA (Last Date) 6/29/90 4.0 AUD 135 Force Ten, Freewill, Distant Early Warning, Time Stand Still, Subdivisions, Marathon, Red Barchetta, Superconductor, Show Don't Tell, The Pass, Closer to the Heart, Manhattan Project, Xanadu, YYZ, The Rhythm Method, Scars, War Paint, Mission, Tom Sawyer, The Spirit of Radio, 2112 - Overture, La Villa Strangiato, In the Mood, Wipe Out. --COMMENTS: Unfortunately about as good as Presto tapes get. Not a bad audience recording, but not as good as other concert tours. Highlights: Scars, War Paint, encore medley. Fairly static setlists in this tour. (Hold Your Fire Tour) *Omaha, NE 4/2/88 5.0 AUD 135 The Big Money, Subdivisions, Limelight, Marathon, Turn the Page, Prime Mover, Manhattan Project, Closer to the Heart, Red Sector A, Force Ten, Time Stand Still, Distant Early Warning, Lock and Key, Mission, Territories, YYZ, The Rhythm Method, Red Lenses, The Spirit of Radio, Tom Sawyer, 2112 (Overture, Temples of Syrinx), La Villa Strangiato, In the mood. --COMMENTS: Quite possible the best audience tapes ever. It has more sonic characteristics of a soundboard than an audience tape. Many times the crowd has the usual (low volume) roar that is consistently found on confirmed soundboard tapes like Hartford '81. What is most striking is the amazing clarity and separation of the different instruments. Each effect on the drums and every keyboard trade is well balanced in this audience tape's mix. Omaha is a prime example of a late Hold Your Fire show. Highlights: Prime Mover, Turn the Page, Marathon, Drum Solo/Red Lenses medley. Setlist was static on this tour. This is certainly the best available show in its entirety. (Power Windows Tour) *Mecca Arena - Milwaukee, WI 3/24/86 4.0 AUD 135 The Spirit of Radio, Limelight, The Big Money, New World Man, Subdivisions, The Manhattan Project, Middletown Dreams, Witch Hunt, Red Sector A, Closer to the Heart, Marathon, The Trees, Mystic Rhythms, Distant Early Warning, Territories, YYZ/Drum Solo/Red Lenses, Tom Sawyer, 2112 (Overture, Temples of Syrinx), Grand Designs, In the Mood. --COMMENTS: Staple of the Power Windows tour. You can note changes in the drum part and possibly the guitar as well. However, most of the Moving Pictures setlist is kept intact. This setlist represents Rush's first attempt at cutting down the longer songs rather than playing them in their entirety. The result is a mindblowing series of medleys and edited songs making this probably the most atypical show Rush has ever performed. A joy to listen to. Origins of this tape are questionable as Rush soundboards are few and far between. This one, however, is not horribly rare. By far the best from this period. Highlights: Medleys, Reggae Working Man, Hemispheres parts, Pre-release Subdivisions. Filler: Xanadu, Cinderella from 12/77 Montreal "Fly in the Night" CD from audience tape. *Rush N Roulette - Chicago 1981 2.5 ? 90 (Permanent Waves Tour) *Kiel Auditorium St Louis, MO 3/16/80 5.0 SBD 90 2112 (Overture, Temples, Discovery, Presentation, Soliloquy, Finale), The Spirit of Radio, Natural Science, Beneath Between and Behind, By-Tor-> Xanadu, Working Man-> Finding My Way-> Anthem-> Bastille Day-> In the Mood-> Drum Solo, La Villa Strangiato (Filler: Not Fade Away, You Can't Fight It. --COMMENTS: Great quality soundboard. The Encore is missing. In places, this tape may overshadow Chicago 12/16/78 for the best show from the Hemispheres tour. Highlights: By-Tor/Xanadu medley, Cygnus / Hemispheres coupling. Once again, a very clear audience tape. Good separation. This show does contain "Circumstances" which was dropped in the 1979 leg of the Hemispheres tour. (A Farewell to Kings Tour) *The Palladium - NY, NY 11/12/77 5.0 AUD 90 Bastille Day, Lakeside Park, By-Tor and the Snow Dog, Xanadu, A Farewell to Kings, Something for Nothing, Cygnus X-I, Anthem, Closer to the Heart, 2112 Working Man, Fly By Night, In the Mood, Drum Solo --COMMENTS: One of the best audience tapes from the A Farewell to Kings \ tour. Unbelievably clear for 1977 technology. Highlight: Cygnus X-I and Xanadu. Separation of instruments is also very good. Minimum reverb. Supposedly taped in the first row on the right side. Fairly representative of the AFTK tour. (2112 Tour) *Nelson Center - Washington, DC 5/30/76 4.8 SBD 90 Bastille Day, Anthem, Lakeside Park, 2112 (Overture, Temples of Syrinx, Presentation, Soliloquy, Grand Finale), Fly By Night, In the Mood, Something for Nothing, By-Tor and the Snow Dog, In the End, Working Man, Finding My Way, Drum Solo, What You're Doing --COMMENTS: Warbles a bit at the beginning, then clears up. May be an FM broadcast, but probably a soundboard. No crowd noise at all. Great sound. Highlights: In the End, "Its HOT!" stage antics. (Fly By Night Tour) *Agora Ballroom - Cleveland, OH 5/75 5.0 FM 40 What You're Doing, Anthem, Between Beneath Behind, In the End, Fly By Night, Working Man/Drum Solo --COMMENTS: Note the extended lyrics to Fly By Night.
