September 30, 2006

After driving the car for a year with the Blaupunkt stereo head unit
hiding in the glove compartment, I decided that there were two problems
with it.

Number one, I couldn't turn it up loud enough to hear the music over the
noise of the car without distorting those cheesy front speakers.

Number 2, I couldn't see the faceplate without leaning over to look into
the back of the glovebox. I had to find the volume knob by feel.

So to solve these problems, I took it all out and started over. I built a
new wooden frame for the head unit which fits nicely into the glove box.
This new frame positions the head unit more towards the front of the glove
box where I can see it from the driver's seat.

I also bought a pair of small 100 watt Pioneer speakers to mount under the
dash. I had to make a custom wood bracket to hold them. The bracket had
to fit around the ashtray, and avoid the steering column and heater box, so
there was a lot of trial and error before I got it to fit right.

I also didn't want to permanently mount the wooden bracket to the dash, so
I added some of this stuff people put down in cabinets. It is a little
sticky on one side, and has a little bit of foam-like give to it. I wanted
to keep the bracket from rattling so this seems to work great.

The new speaker bracket basically just rests on top of the console storage
compartment.

With the new speakers hooked up to the rear channel, and the existing twin
speakers in the dash hooked up to the front channel, the sound is now
much better, and can be turned up loud without distortion.

I plan on coating or painting the wooden frame in the glovebox with something
dark to make it blend in better soon.
