The trans that I helped rebuild earlier wound up having a bad leak from the
bell housing. I don't know if we had a ding in the front pump seal, or if
something was wrong with the way the torque converter attached to the input shaft.
Whatever the case - instead of paying $500 for a local shop to figure it out
I talked a friend in my Mustang club into selling me a newly rebuilt C4 for
100 bucks.
Another friend in the Mustang club has a neighbor who fixes cars out of a
nice hidden garage behind his home. It has a lift, and all the tools you
could want.
So I borrowed a car hauler, and used my Sport Trac to bring it on over.
I had never towed anything so heavy before with this vehicle, so I was
impressed with how well my Trac was able to tow!
Anyway, the neighbor mechanic is very knowledgeable about these older cars,
and he had the new trans installed in a hurry. He also helped me track down
a lifter noise by re-tightening the mechanical valve lifter nuts to spec.
There is still a noise coming from the lower end - but that turns out to
be coming from a dent in the oil pan. The dent is pushed in underneath the
rear cylinder, and the rod is probably clanking against the pan ever so
slightly every time it goes by. It sort of sounds like someone banging on
a coffee can with a hammer.
Hopefully, I will bring the Ranchero with me to the next Mustang tech meeting
to get more lift time, and to get that pan off and pound out the dent...
